Making Lessons Shine – Lesson Planning and Facilitation Techniques that Foster Deep Student Thinking and Interaction for All of Our Students

Peter Brunn is Director of Professional Development at DSC. He oversees the provision of staff development services to schools and districts across the country. Before joining DSC, Peter was a staff developer for the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project and worked in New York City public schools helping teachers implement reading and writing workshops in their classrooms. Peter began his career in education as an elementary school teacher in the Bronx, where he taught first and fourth grades. He received his master’s degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University, and his undergraduate degree in History from Marquette University.

Dr. Michael Smith
“Reading Don’t Fix No Chevys”: Motivating and Assisting the Academic Achievement of Boys (and Girls Too!)
Dr. Michael W. Smith is a professor at Temple University’s College of Education. He joined the ranks of college teachers after 11 years of teaching high school English. He has been Chair of the Literature Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association, Co-Chair of the National Council of Teachers of English Assembly for Research, and co-editor of Research in the Teaching of English. He has written, co-written, or edited nine books and monographs, including "Reading Don't Fix No Chevys": Literacy in the Lives of Young Men, for which he and his co-author received the 2003 David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English. His writing has appeared in multiple industry journals and in his most recent books (both written with Jeffrey D. Wilhelm), Fresh Takes on Teaching Literary Elements: How to Teach What Really Matters about Character, Setting, Point of View and Theme and Getting it Right: Fresh Approaches to Teaching Grammar, Usage, and Correctness (New York: Scholastic, 2010/2007), he explores how to create instructional contexts that motivate adolescents. He is an author of Hampton-Brown’s Edge, a literature anthology series designed for struggling and ELL high-school students, which was published in spring 2007.

This year's Feature Speakers include Kathy Gilbert, Rita Sacks, Deb Larson, Adrienne Battistone, Dr. Karen Feathers, and a special feature on "Speaking in Tongues".
Feature Speakers

Kathy Gilbert
Kathy Gilbert has been in the field of education for over forty years as a teacher and educational consultant. Her teaching experiences in California and Michigan have been at the elementary and secondary levels, and she has also taught classes on content area literacy at the college level to prospective secondary teachers. As an educational consultant in publishing for many years, she trained teachers, addressed educators and parents across the country on numerous topics related to reading/language arts and other content areas, and worked with school systems to improve instruction and integrate research into classroom practice.

She has had her own consulting business for the past nine years helping districts maximize curriculum, instruction, and assessment to meet the rigorous demands of state content standards and testing. She has a B.A. in education from DePauw University and a M.A. in curriculum and instruction from California State University.

Angela Terry-Boggs
Angela Terry-Boggs is an experienced educator, dedicated to working with students in a variety of ways. Currently, she serves as a National Consultant for National Geographic School Publishing/Hampton-Brown, where she delivers sales and training presentations for teachers and administrators on products and topics surrounding specific content needs, literacy, and language development for English Language Learners and struggling readers. Much of her recent focus has been providing support for districts and teachers in the area of science curriculum.

Candy Carro
Candy Carro is an educational consultant with over thirty years in the classroom, mentoring students from Kindergarten through Graduate School as well as coaching teachers in Best Content Literacy Practices and how reading and writing are critical to success in Science, Social Studies and Math. Candy facilitates professional development in local, national, and international forums including IRA, NMSA, and NSTA. In addition she works with struggling students, teachers and principals to insure effective and equal literacy opportunities that promote student achievement in school and beyond.

Break-Out Sessions
This year’s Institute offers two days of break-out sessions with new speakers, a diverse group of topics and an additional track of break-out sessions. Attendees will be able to choose four different sessions each day for a total of eight unique sessions.

Earn SB-CEU's
Once again, MABE is pleased to provide 0.5-1.0 SB-CEUs for this Institute. Credit will be provided through the Michigan Institute for Educational Management (MEIM). To qualify, you must complete a Validation Sheet, available at the MABE Registration Table. MEIM will require payment on-site.

Once the forms are received and payments processed, the information is uploaded to the Secure Central Registry (SCR). The participants should have received an automated email notifying them of an evaluation. Participants have 30 days to complete the evaluation. Credit is posted to the participant’s unofficial transcript upon completion of the evaluation. If the evaluation is not completed within 30-days, the credit is forfeited.

Forms for those participants who did not meet time requirements or failed to make payments would not receive evaluations as forms would not be uploaded to the Secure Central Registry.
